Welding Division - Consumable inserts

Consumable Weld Inserts are produced to AWS A 5.30 & ASME SFA5.30 and are used to produce full-penetration welded joints with acceptable root bead profile.

Consumable Inserts are used in association with the GTAW process. They are also referred to as EB Consumable Inserts.

The insert acts as pre-placed filler metal and is located by tack welding within the root gap of the joint to be produced. A GTAW arc is applied over the insert, which subsequently fuses to form an X-Ray quality root bead, ready for the following fill and capping passes made with added filler metal.

The most typical application is for producing high quality welded joints in critical pressure pipe and tube.

A major application is in submarine and power boiler pressure piping fabrication.

Consumable inserts are produced for many alloy systems, including the popular:

  • Cupro-nickel (IN813, IN67,)
  • Monel (IN816, IN60,)
  • Stainless engineering steels (IN308L, IN316L, IN347, etc)
  • Structural and creep resistant steels (MS-1, IN515, IN521, etc)
  • Nickel alloys (IN625, IN382, etc)

They are supplied in three Styles;

  • Over-lapping preformed rings (style B)
  • Butted preformed rings (style C)
  • 50’ coils, which is the most commonly used form (style A)

Typical insert wire diameters are 2.4mm, 3.2mm & 4mm.

Insert cross-section profiles are commonly referred to as Class1- A & Class5 - K shape) (J shape is discontinued)

When enquiring about Consumable Weld Inserts, please specify:

  • the alloy type (e.g. 316L, Monel 60 etc)
  • the insert form-Style (e.g. 50’ coil)
  • the insert profile shape (Class1-A or Class 5-K)
  • the insert diameter (e.g. 4mm)
  • the quantity (e.g. 250’, 1,000 rings)
  • whether nuclear release is required

VBC Consumable Weld Inserts are surface cleaned, have full traceability and actual chemistry certification, and product identification coining.

Special bespoke batches of Consumable Weld Inserts made from customer-supplied raw material can also be produced.

Technical support is available.
